Hacked: An Important Lesson From Rain City Guide
Yesterday morning when I went to catch up on the prolific Rain City Guide real estate blog, I was greeted with this picture:

Needless to say, the site was hacked.
Thanks to some good backups and the apparently super human administrator, Dustin, everything is back to normal and Rain City Guide is back to delivering quality information.
Here are a couple of things to take away from this to help you steer clear of losing your website if you are ever the target:
- Your real estate website will have problems. It’s just a matter of when. Prepare for the inevitable before it happens and you will minimize any disruption to your business. It reminds me of a principle I learned from Robert J. Ringer that he called The Theory of Sustenance of a Positive Attitude through the Assumption of a Negative Result. Sounds like pretty pessimistic thinking to always be assuming a negative result, but it isn’t. It’s just realistic thinking. Prepare for the worst, try for the best.
- In the end, your real estate business is your responsibility. So even if you are paying a web host to watch your site for you, check in with them about the back up plan. Don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. The worst thing that can happen to the webhost is lose a customer, but you could lose a business… Find out what they backup, how often and how quickly you get your site restored if there is a problem. And don’t worry if all the tech talk is over your head. Get them to explain it to you in plain English or take that as a clue to keep your web hosting options open.
Kudos to everybody at Rain City Guide for their quick recovery! So much for a labor free Labor Day weekend.
