Are you training your IT or is IT training you?

A few decades ago, when people envisioned the year 2000 to be filled with flying cars and computers with personalities, many thought that technology would be so advanced as to obey our every wish and command.

The year is now 2006, and I have one question for the business owners of the group:

Are you training your technology or is it training YOU?

If you realize, one day, that your computer won’t print your client reports unless you click the mouse twice, hit the J key three times and whack the side of the machine, what are most of us likely to do?

Unfortunately, most of us, without a thought, would become very good at clicking the mouse, pressing the J key and delivering a blow to the piece of junk under our desks.

So what’s wrong with this picture? Why are we, the intelligent ones, having our behavior altered by inanimate bundles of plastic and silicon?

It happens because we (humans) are completely adaptable to our surroundings, while technology, on the other hand, is not. At this point in time, technology is designed for a specific purpose, place and task. It also happens because we simply do not demand better.

The bottom line is, don’t accept the limits that you think technology places on you or your business. If you smack into one of those limits, the smart thing to do is blast right through it. Whether that means upgrading your systems, your software, or trying a completely different approach altogether, the important thing is not to accept the limits, but to transcend them.

Technology should not be a take it or leave it proposition. It is something that is ever evolving with but one goal: to make you and your business more productive, enjoyable and profitable.
